Mature students
If you’re aged 21 or over when you begin your studies you’re classed as a mature student. We welcome applications from mature students from all backgrounds onto both full-time and part-time programmes.
Your life and work experience mean there are alternative entry routes available other than formal qualifications, including a foundation course, a validated access course and the Access to Higher Education Diploma.
For specific entry criteria, please search for your course.
If you are applying for a part-time degree, you should apply directly to the University by emailing our Our Learning Centre:
To gain a degree at IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON, you will need to meet the minimum entry requirements and specific requirements for your chosen course, which you can find by searching for courses.
This information is for applicants from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. If you are applying from another country/region/region, please read our information on accepted international qualifications.
The typical minimum entry requirement for all of our undergraduate degree programs is passing in a combination of five subjects at the GCSE (or IGCSE) and GCE A (or International A Level) exams, or equivalent qualifications. It must include:
At least a grade A* to C/9-4 in English at GCSE or equivalent
Calculation (requirement depends on the course)
Grade A*-E in three A levels.
a * = 8 or 9
a = 7
b = 5 or 6
c = 4
You can find out which equivalent qualifications we accept in the following sections.
The exact entry requirements for your chosen course will generally be more specific than the university’s minimum requirements and will tell you which scores you need. You can find course entry requirements in the course search.
We normally expect applicants to have completed three A-levels (or equivalent) at one sitting. If you haven’t, we will need your school or college to tell us why.
The following list tells you more about our policies regarding acceptance of qualifications equivalent to GCSE and A-levels. If your qualification is not listed here, you should contact our Admissions Team, details of which you can find on your course page.
International applicants should check our information on accepted international qualifications.
This explains what you can expect after you place your order.
You can keep up to date with the progress of your application through the registration department or our agents around the world.
We will notify you when we have made a decision on your application. If you receive an offer, you can inform us of your decision to accept or decline it.
We usually receive a large number of applications to our courses. We aim to make decisions on applications submitted as soon as possible.
For some fields, the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, to ensure that we treat all applications fairly and equitably.
For some areas, including business, computing, law, media and communications, we may put your application on hold before a final decision is made. We do this to ensure we don’t make too many offers for your course, this means that all applications received are guaranteed to be considered equally.
It also helps us to ensure that we get the planned number of students for your course, giving you the high quality student experience you have come to expect from IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON.
